ahhhh! the joy of teaching!!!

for the past two terms, excluding this one, i have been teaching a new (well, new as far as APC is concerned) technology called Python, not the slimy creature but the programming language. this language can rival MS Visual Basic in robustness, not only in developing web-centric applications, but desktop applications as well when paired with Tcl/tk or other GUI drag-and-drop programming languages. it is really very nice, i tell you!
anyway, the OSL was proven correct when one of my former students in that class, Freddie Atendido, went on to his 6-month internship (a school requirement) at Vertex Solutions and as his 1st client, he was sent to Globe Telecoms. anyway, here is the full text of his email:
Hi Sirs….
Just wanna share something………….
I got some good news down here… I was tasked to develop a content management system (CMS) for Globe Telecoms… it should be web based and have a search feature….. the task was too big for me considering my timeline was only two weeks (well, a week from now).. i immediately started developing it using MySQL and PHP… but after a day of coding.. I realized that there are some open source CMS out there.. so i go to google and search for the one that i need…. luckily I found Plone… (http://www.plone.org)… I was surprised that it was running on top of Zope (http://www.zope.org) and Zope was developed using Python, and luckily again…. I used Zope for my last project in LUIPROG….. and voila…. it just took me two days to setup it all up and I already have a dummy server running Python, Zope and Plone….. I showed it to my IT superiors and they were all amazed by the power of it…. so they have given me a permission to access our Linux Server…. so I installed it on our Linux Server… which will act as the Web Server here.. I have installed Python, Zope and Plone on it… and now it is running… I will be having my presentation and demo 2mrw with the Globe Operations Manager… she was surprised by how fast I have come up with the solution to their problem…. and also as part of my project I will train the Content Managers for Globe Operations and also I will teach my IT superiors how to use and setup a Plone Server …… I am thankful that I have taken Open Source as my elective and I am proud to be a student of APC……
sir Joegene…. unfortunately they didnt allow me to use MySQL as a replacement for Access database…. they just gave me permission to access the MSSQL Server… so my application now uses MSSQL Server not Access anymore…….
it’s a mixed-up platform here… we have a lone server running Red Hat 9.0 … which acts as the back-up server.. which will now be my Web Server… and the rest of the server runs Windows….. they dont use Open Source products here… but since I am here I am influencing them to use Open Source… hehehehe
see you soon… !
